Bowen's Disease: Early-Stage Skin Cancer

Understanding Bowen's Disease

Bowen's disease, also known as squamous cell carcinoma in situ, is a non-invasive, early form of skin cancer that arises from the outer layer of the skin (epidermis). It manifests as scaly patches that can transform into more severe skin cancer if left untreated.

Symptoms and Causes

Bowen's disease typically presents as red, scaly patches on the sun-exposed areas of the skin, such as the face, hands, and arms. The patches are typically slow-growing and may resemble eczema or other skin conditions. The exact cause of Bowen's disease is unknown, but it is linked to ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun or tanning beds. Individuals with a weakened immune system or a history of organ transplantation may be at a higher risk of developing the condition.
