Humberto de Alencar Castelo Branco was born on July 18, 1900, in Fortaleza, Brazil. He embarked on a military career, graduating from the Military School of Realengo in 1921 and subsequently serving in various command positions.
Rise to Power
Castelo Branco's military background and conservative views brought him into prominence during a period of political instability in Brazil. In 1964, he played a key role in a military coup that overthrew the left-leaning government of João Goulart.
Presidency
As president from 1964 to 1967, Castelo Branco implemented a series of measures that aimed to restore order and promote economic growth. These measures included suppressing political dissent, enacting economic austerity policies, and aligning Brazil with the United States during the Cold War.
